Triangle mentoring group sees increase in interest after WNCN story

DURHAM, N.C. -

People in the Triangle are stepping up to help after WNCN reported on over 200 kids in the area needing a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle.

As a part of WNCN's "Smarter Community" series, a story in July said Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle had 200 boys and 50 girls on a waiting list for a mentor.

In the three weeks since the first report, Big Brothers Big Sisters has seen a 40 percent increase in an interest in mentoring boys. The organization said they have had 8-10 inquiries a day to volunteer when they usually receive 0-2 inquires a week to volunteer.

Big Brothers Big Sisters tries to give attention to kids who might otherwise head down a road of drugs and violence.

The mentoring organization is holding an orientation on Aug. 9. Read a blogpost from Durham Cares about the increase in interest and the orientation set for Friday.
