DURHAM, N.C. -

The grandmother of a toddler who went missing Saturday in Durham says she wants her daughter charged after police learned the 15-year-old gave the child to a friend.

Two-year-old Zy'ion McCallum was reported missing around noon Sunday by his mother after last being seen on Saturday at the Durham Station Transportation Center with a woman named Jasmine Johnson.

After questioning the boy's aunt, 15-year-old Donise Cates, police went to a house on Potter Street, where Zy'ion was located early Monday morning.

Zy'ion's grandmother, Rosa Robinson, said Cates was supposed to take the toddler to a near-by park when plans changed.

"Donise got off the bus [and] handed the baby to a lady," Robinson said. "She told the lady she was getting ready to go to a party and taking Zy'ion with her."

Robinson explained that the woman, identified as Jasmine Johnson, insisted that she would watch Zy'ion while Cates attended the party. From the bus station, Johnson took Zy'ion to the Potter Street home where he was later recovered.

Police say they are still investigating the case, but Robinson said she would like to see police charge Cates, who is her daughter, in Zy'ion's disappearance.

"I see it as kidnapping because you took a baby that's not your baby, gave it to somebody else and they're gone with the baby," Robinson said. "You didn't even go back to that person and try to get the baby back. You didn't try to do anything.

"You wouldn't say where the baby was at for a long time."

Robinson said she is still trying to piece together what happened, and said Zy'ion is acting differently -- scratching and sleeping a lot.

"I'll be trying to play with him and he's not playing like he used to," Robinson explained. "He's not really doing anything like he used to. Only thing is he wants is to be in my arms.

"I mean, that's not Zy'ion. If you put Zy'ion down, he was gone."

She added, "He tells me, ‘Scratch the back. Scratch the back.' That's why I told my daughter to get him a physical."

Zy'ion's mother, Latara Robinson, was not available for comment.
