Anti-Obamacare ad campaign debuts before key provisions take effect

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

"Now I wonder, can I still talk with parents to decide what's best for their kids, or will the government be in the middle of things?"

That's one of the questions asked in a new TV ad from the conservative political action group Americans for Prosperity. Obamacare has been on the books now for more than three years.

The ad now raises questions about the healthcare overhaul as final pieces begin to take effect.

"It is extremely destructive to American healthcare," Director of Americans For Prosperity North Carolina Dallas Woodhouse said.

Woodhouse says the ad, and the web site it directs people to, is all about educating the public.

"People need to understand, when they start seeing dramatically higher premiums later this year what is causing it," he said. "They need to see that when they are not able to see the doctor what is causing it."

Ads like these are playing on TV stations across North Carolina and across the country as a key deadline approaches. On Oct. 1, open enrollment beings for new healthcare insurance exchanges. Many adults who aren't insured will soon need to purchase it through those exchanges.

"The system is designed to try and get most everybody to sign up for insurance," NC State University political scientist Steven Greene said, "and that helps make the system work for people who have those pre-existing conditions, who are otherwise very expensive to cover.  You bring in the young, healthy people and it makes the economics of the whole situation work out."

Greene says the ad campaign could work to discourage people from participating and undermine the system.

"Conservatives have decided that they have to do everything they can to stop it and if that's making people less likely to sign up for insurance...There's talk they want to create a budget battle over this issue, so I think this is part of a larger conservative campaign," he said.

That larger campaign also includes dozens of votes in the U.S. House of Representatives to de-fund Obamacare. A small minority of Republicans have even threatened a government shutdown if it moves forward.

Democrats we spoke with Wednesday denounced the Americans for Prosperity ad campaign as a last-minute attempt to keep the system from working.
