The community got a peak inside Muscogee County's newest school as it was dedicated Saturday. Superintendent David Lewis hosted the event which featured the children of the late Judge Aaron Cohn, the middle school's namesake. Cohn's daughter Gail said she is honored that the school district is remembering her father this way.
"I'm feeling extremely proud. It's a well deserved name for the school," said Gail Cohn. She is the oldest of Cohn's 3 children. They were all present at the middle school dedication ceremony Saturday. Gail said naming the school after her father is one of the best ways to honor his legacy.
"Our father loved children. He wanted them to have a better life and felt like the way you get a better life is through education," said Gail Cohn. The educational experience started for the 477 students Wednesday. They came to their new 19 million dollar middle school for the first time. Principal Green said the dedication ceremony was the culmination of hard work by the school board, teachers, and taxpayers.
"This feels like the super bowl here today and thankfully we have a day after the super bowl tomorrow to rest," said Principal Green. He said technological innovation will be a staple for the brand new middle school.
"We are a bring your own device school. So the students are allowed to bring their personal electronic devices to school and we will utilize them in this educational setting," said Green.
Smart phones, tablets, and ipods are some of the welcome devices. Each classroom is also equipped with a smart board and students can log onto the school's wifi network as well.
Principal Green said there will be keywords posted throughout the school that will remind students of the best qualities of Aaron Cohn: honestly, integrity, respect, cooperation, kindness and fairness are a few of them.
