New-look Wildcats say 2013 is their year

Posted: Updated:

The Schley County Wildcats have nowhere to go but up, and they intend to do just that in 2013.

After a 2-8 campaign last season, the Cats say they are a different team this year.

"We are way stronger and we are way faster than last year," said junior running back Tra Minter. "We've been in the weight room. The whole team's dedicated, we've just been grinding the whole year, whole summer, spring."

Minter is one of the team's biggest weapons, a legitimate SEC prospect who has already received offers from Troy, Georgia Southern and Middle Tennessee State. Another is senior quarterback Matt Corbin, entering his second year as a starter.

"This year, our strength is going to be our offense," Corbin said. "We're really fast-paced, run the option a lot. Our defense is what we're working on to get stronger, and our special teams."

Schley County hasn't made the playoffs in years, but these guys say that changes now.

"[We're] trying to get this ring," Minter said. "The goal is just to win region, go to state playoffs and then go to the Dome. That's what I think all the teams want to do, but I think our team wants it the most."

Schley County opens the season on the road at Miller County Aug. 30.
