There's some good news for job seekers in our area. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia is bringing 750 new jobs to Georgia. 400 of those positions will be in Columbus. The new jobs are the result of an agreement with the state of Georgia. The company has taken over the State Health Benefit plan which provides health benefits to all State of Georgia employees. Mike Gaymon at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce said the jobs benefit new employees and the city as a whole.
"Now they'll be more landscaping, maybe they'll buy a house, maybe they'll buy another car, maybe they'll buy a TV, they can buy more groceries. It impacts everyone from an economic development standpoint," said Gaymon.
The State Health Benefit plan will bring 650,000 additional customers. The company needs 400 people in the Columbus area to handle the workload. They are looking for claims examiners, customer service representatives, and front line managers.
Jennifer Wade, Staff EP of Operations, said they are looking to fill the positions soon.
"Our telephone lines go live for the State of Georgia 10/1 so you can imagine we're working very quickly to get these roles filled," said Wade.
The 400 employees will be housed in a location off of technology parkway. It's still undergoing renovations but should be opened by mid-September. Wade says they should have their first group of employees hired by that time as well, but it's not too late to apply.
"We're looking very much forward to our local talent filling these roles," said Wade.
The Labor Commissioner of Georgia said we'll have to wait and see the long term impact.
"You're also going to see possibly a lot of people who work for other insurance companies losing jobs take those, so we'll have to wait and see what the total impact is later," said Mark Butler.
You can fill out an online application to apply for an open position. Wade said they also accept referrals from current employees.
