School supply giveaway goes on despite theft

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A school supply giveaway for needy kids went on as scheduled Tuesday despite someone breaking into the Helping Hand Mission on Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh Sunday.

The robbers stole more than 60 book bags filled with the supplies, from notebooks to pens and pencils and calculators.

"I could see if they stole televisions or the computer or different things that we have here - but they stole the kids book bags. I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe nobody would be so mean," said Sylvia Wiggins, Director of the Mission.

On Tuesday, though, the Mission still gave away about 400 bookbags from the roughly 1,000 in hand in stock for needy children. In fact, the Mission got donations of about 40 bookbags from people who saw the news about the theft and stepped up to volunteer.

Whoever broke in loaded the bags on a Mission truck, stole it, and took off.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call the Raleigh Police, who are looking for a 1999 white Chevy pickup truck.

If you have any school supplies you'd like to donate - you can drop them off at 623 Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh.

The Raleigh Police Department is still working the case.
