Ford expected to miss Auburn season opener

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn Tigers will be without their 2012 leader in sacks for at least the first game of the season.

Dee Ford will "no question" miss the season opener against Washington State, according to defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, with an injured ligament in his left knee.

Johnson said the injury occurred early in the Tigers' first scrimmage when "someone's leg hit him in the side." Ford will not need surgery, but could be out for what Johnson called "extended time."

Ford's is just the latest injury the Tiger defense has dealt with this spring. Justin Garrett is out with a mild foot sprain, and Jonathan Jones was injured off the field and underwent surgery.

"It hurts your progress in preseason camp when you got people missing," Johnson said. "That's been the biggest problem. We've just had a hard time making steady improvement over the entire big picture."

LaDarius Owens was moved from defensive end to linebacker this spring, but has practiced at both positions to provide depth.
