Repairs underway to faulty Moore Co. 911 system

Posted: Updated:
CARTHAGE, N.C. -

Details are starting to emerge about what is being done to fix the 911 system in Moore County.

County Manager Wayne Vest said a faulty back up battery was repaired Monday.

The repairs come after a man's house burned to the ground during an outage Aug. 11. The center could not answer calls between 12:45 a.m. and 2:14 a.m. Moore County Fire Marshal Kenneth Skipper said the fire at the home on Birch Drive in Vass was reported around 1:30 a.m.

"How do you reassure them that this system is going to work in the future?" said Vest. "We're making every effort to make sure that we're able to take the calls.  This has given us an opportunity to review our process."

On Aug. 9 and July 23, the center also had a problem receiving 911 calls. Those first two times, the problem was an issue with the phone lines, which has been addressed.

Damaged equipment caused a phone call outage for about an hour Aug. 18. The center returned to normal around 9 p.m.

Moore County Public Safety Director Bryan Phillips said the two more recent problems happened because there was a power outage, and the back-up battery system did not work as it should.

Although this most recent power loss was brief, it still caused the computers to shut down. Normally the battery back-up would automatically compensate for the power loss, but components in the system are broken.

Vest said Schneider Electric produced the part that failed. A different contractor, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, install the part.

He said he hesitates to assign blame to either until a full investigation is complete.
