Watauga Election Board erases meeting minutes

Posted: Updated:
BOONE, N.C. -

Parts of the minutes of a recent meeting of the Watauga County Elections Board have been erased at the request of the chairman of the panel.

A third version of the minutes of the Aug. 12 meeting was approved Tuesday.

Board member Kathleen Campbell said parts of the earlier meeting that were erased from the minutes include her question on how much money would be saved by consolidating precincts in Boone, eliminating a polling location at Appalachian State University.

Campbell said she was told it would save no money.

The Winston-Salem Journal obtained a copy of the first  draft, and in that, Campbell asked the elections board director, Jane Hodges, about how much money consolidating three Boone precincts into one precinct would save.

Hodges' response: "None."

According to The Journal, Campbell also raised concerns about how a new polling places would be much further from most voters in the precinct.

The approved version of the minutes merely says precinct locations were discussed.

Board Chairman Luke Eggers said the minutes should only include proposals and votes and not the details of the discussion.

"The minutes are to reflect what the board did - the business of the board - in a concise manner, and I feel like the minutes that were written do exactly that," Eggers said.

The newly consolidated precinct is the third-largest in North Carolina, with more than 9,300 voters.

Closing polling locations at college campuses has become an issue in several cities after changes in voter laws approved by state lawmakers this year.
