McCrory signs 33 bills, including one attacking red tape

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory has signed into law 33 bills, including a wide-ranging regulatory bill he says will cut burdensome rules for businesses and government red tape.

The anchor of the 59-page law signed Friday is a new process by which state officials review rules to carry out environmental, health and labor laws among others and repeal them if they are found unnecessary.

The bill also requires all hotels to install carbon monoxide detectors in each room, following three poisoning deaths in the same Boone motel room this year.

McCrory's office said he signed 33 bills Friday afternoon. Among those signed:

* SB 473, which states the House Speaker and President Pro Tempore can intervene in judicial proceedings challenging a North Carolina statue or provision in the constitution. That bill has been criticized by Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat, who says his office is the one to properly represent the state.

"It's a great day for North Carolina's small businesses when the governor signs our third regulatory reform act in three years into law," said Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, a Republican from Eden. Berger said the legislation "continues to eliminate the needless, duplicative, and confusing regulations that hamstring our job-creators and our economy."

McCrory signed two executive orders to address concerns he had with the bills on clear-cutting around billboards and garbage trucks that could leak liquid waste.

McCrory's office said he will allow House Bill 522 to become law without his signature because he believes the bill is unnecessary.
