RALEIGH, N.C. -

A large fire tore through rooftops of a building at Camden Crest Apartments on Manor Valley Court  off Lynn Road in Raleigh Saturday evening.

A neighbor told WNCN the complex has both smoke alarms and a sprinkler system. Residents said the sprinkler system did not activate.

Residents believe the fire started on the third floor. One person could be seen being treated on a stretcher by emergency responders.

Teresa Ellis, a resident at Camden Crest, said, "I was chasing my dogs down and they (firefighters) were wanting me to leave with them and I was not going to do it."

Cameron Beam also lives at the apartment complex. Beam said, "I'm 21 and I never had anything like this happen before."

Leonard Windham has been at Camden Crest for a year. "Life can change at an instant and you just got to appreciate what the most important things in life are," Windham said.

The Red Cross is on scene to help the victims with basic necessities and find temporary shelter.
