In just their second year on the football field, Point University expects to build a legacy of success and family. The team is working hard for their first game of the year on Saturday.

The Point Skyhawks are training hard for their second season. The team says they have made many strides since their inaugural year.

"It was very different because you're starting everything from grassroots, bottom line. Getting equipment in for the first time, when I say equipment, I'm not talking about the players, but field equipment, dummies, and sleds. It was just starting from scratch," said Skyhawks head coach David Rocker.

Coach David Rocker has been watching film to make sure his guys can improve on their 2-8 record from last year.

"I think the big difference this year is structure. Last year, we were kind of all over the place. This year, we have structure," Rocker said

The school is placing a big emphasis on building their fan base and tradition.

"That is one of the things we are trying to do is get the fan base involved and get the community to grow. That is one of the things I'm pushing this year. I think last year, everybody was kind of taking it in that a college football team was here," Rocker said.

"Having a football team certainly adds excitement and a sense of community that is sometimes missing when you don't have a football team," said Point University President Dean Collins. "You being from the south know this is football land. There is a lot of excitement around college football."

Many of the Skyhawks played high school around the Valley area.

"Being able to come to a school where kids know that I'm going to a place where football is important," Rocker said. "Of course, it's not more important than the mission of Point. But, being able to come here, have a great Christian experience. They can play a level of football they can be proud of and play for a team they can be proud of."

Coaches say you can expect a physical football team on both sides of the ball.

The Skyhawks will host Bluefield College out of Virginia on Saturday at Ram Stadium in Valley.

Standing in front of the old storefront, Ham told me, "At the Georgia game I still had people that would say to me, 'Man, I was in school and your dad helped me do this or that.'
