RALEIGH, N.C. -

Parts of Raleigh came to a stop Sunday night as storms brought downpours and prolific lightning to the area.

Most of the problems were focused around Creedmoor Road and Glenwood Avenue, where roads were flooded and dozens of drivers were stranded.

A large tree brought down power lines at Creedmoor Road and Tall Timber Drive, bringing a swarm of police and fire units who closed all four lanes of Creedmoor Road about 7 p.m.

Residents who live on Tall Timber Drive waited for hours to get back to their homes, but police said they only had one option. They had to park at the grocery store almost a mile up the road and walk back to their homes.

"It was awful. I was walking in the rain, my wife came down half way and met me with a flashlight," said one resident.

"I walked all the way down last night in drizzling rain and mud was all over the road and it was pitch black all I had was my cell phone," said another.

Residents said the power was out in the area from around 7 p.m. until 1:30 am. That section of Creedmoor Road stayed closed off until late Monday afternoon.

Here are just some of the other reports around Raleigh:

  • There were unconfirmed reports of a water rescue in the 8500 block of Creedmoor Road.
  • A driver was rescued from a car at Old Wake Forest Road and Hodges Creek when water rose up to the rear view mirrors.
  • Traffic lights were out at Millbrook and Creedmoor
  • Millbrook at Leesville Road was flooded.
  • Police closed down New Bern Avenue in both directions.
  • Shortly before 8 p.m., Raleigh Police issued a press release cautioning drivers to seek other routes around Creedmoor and Glenwood.

There were no reports of injuries.
