COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Pacelli Vikings have hired former Central star Doc Brooks as head baseball coach.

The Ledger-Enquirer first reported the news Tuesday afternoon.

Brooks replaces Justin Newman, giving him his first head coaching job. After his playing career ended in 2008, Brooks was an assistant with the Red Devil program from 2008-11.

A standout at Central, Brooks played three years at the University of Georgia, hitting .284 with 45 home runs and 145 runs driven in. He was a seventh-round draft pick in 2001 by the San Diego Padres.

He split six affiliated minor league seasons between the Padres' and Colorado Rockies' organizations, before playing two years of independent ball.
