Former Raleigh mayor Meeker considering gubernatorial run

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former Raleigh mayor Charles Meeker said he is considering running for governor of North Carolina in 2016.

Meeker said he is weighing his options before making a final decision in the spring of 2015. The democrat said he feels N.C. needs a much brighter future than what the General Assembly is offering.

He said the unemployment rates and funding cuts to the education system are too high.

Meeker was first elected mayor of Raleigh in 2001. He was elected to a record-tying fifth term in 2009.

As mayor of Raleigh, Meeker advocated for downtown redevelopment and the creation of a light rail system connecting Raleigh to Durham, Research Triangle Park and Chapel Hill. He also successfully pushed for the construction of a new downtown convention center and hotel, as well as the reconstruction of Fayetteville Street.

Meeker was a vocal supporter of the much-debated Clarence E. Lightner Public Safety Center, which city leaders have still not been able to come to an agreement on. The 17-story building would house all of Raleigh's public safety operations and local government offices in one building and has a price tag of more than $200 million.

Meeker ended his mayoral run in 2011, backing his successor Nancy McFarlane.
