Wake Co. students experiencing problems getting transcripts to colleges

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A transcript system implemented in Wake County is leaving parents and students scratching their heads as they get ready to apply for college.

The portion of the state's new electronic database known as Home Base that provides transcripts to colleges and universities is not working yet.

According to the North Carolina Public Schools website, "Home Base is a statewide, instructional improvement and student information system for teachers, students, parents and administrators."

Home Base's PowerSchool section is supposed to provide access to official grade transcripts, but its rollout is slightly delayed, said PowerSchool transition manager Rosilyn Galloway.

Galloway said the rollout is delayed because the state is still trying to get its system to communicate with the College Foundation of North Carolina.

Most school systems across the state are able to access transcripts through the NC WISE system, but Wake County had its own transcript system that ceased when Wake County switched to Home Base.

That means students like Monae Covington, who attends Broughton High School, are scrambling for alternatives as they need access to transcripts.

"I'm unable to get mine right now, so they gave me an unofficial copy so I can see what I'm doing," Covington said.

Broughton's principal said the school is giving all of its college-bound seniors paper copies of last year's transcripts, providing colleges with students' current class assignments, and sending letters to colleges explaining the delay.

Those alternatives are OK for the time being, but students are worried about getting current transcripts.

"I really do need them," Covington said. "I'm a senior and the semester is almost over."

The state says it hopes to have the problems resolved soon.

"We're supposed to have it in our test system this week," Galloway said. "And we've told the local education agencies that we'd have it on or before Sept. 23."

With early admission deadlines in mid-October, that deadline should be enough time to get transcripts to the appropriate colleges and universities.
