CoverTN officials confirm to News Channel 11 the insurance program will no longer be offered after December 31, 2013.

CoverTN spokeswoman Kelly Gunderson says CoverTN does not meet all of the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, which is why she says it will no longer be an option for insurance coverage.

As for an alternative, Gunderson says people and companies will be able to purchase a similar insurance package through the new federal health insurance marketplace, which came about due to the Affordable Care Act. Gunderson says she doesn't know exactly how the price of CoverTN coverage will compare to the federal health insurance marketplace.

Here are important dates you need to know:

  • Oct. 1, 2013:
You can start enrolling in the federal health insurance marketplace to purchase insurance

  • Dec. 31, 2013:
CoverTN will no longer provide insurance

  • Jan. 1, 2014:
If you purchase insurance through the health insurance marketplace, those plans will take effect
