Man dies in Ladonia house fire

LADONIA, Ala. -

An early Saturday morning blaze in Ladonia has claimed the life of a man.

Ladonia Fire Chief Tom Kane said units responded to a mobile home in Cannon Trailer Park around 3 a.m. Saturday. The fire was fully involved when crews arrived.

A man's body was found in the living room after the fire was extingushed. His identity has not been released, but neighbors said he was in his forties and had lived in the home for several years.

Nelda Harden said her son alerted her to the fire and together the two of them tried to save the victim. "Me and my son tried to go inside and save the guy but we couldn't get in there because the doors was jammed. And the police went with us to the door to try to go in there too before it went up in flames but it was too late. The man died."

Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen, but it is still under investigation by the Alabama State Fire Marshal Office and Phenix City officials. Crews were on scene until 10 a.m. Saturday.

The victim's body will be sent to Montgomery Monday for an autopsy.
