Raleigh Police: SUV debris could be clue in Vandemerwe death

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh Police have obtained a piece of debris from a dark blue SUV that they believe was related to the death of Weston Michael Vandemerwe of Apex on Aug. 13.

Police said there were multiple pieces of debris at the scene, but they were able to eliminate those from the death of Vandemerwe.

"We collected close to 60 pieces out here from five different cars and one vehicle we are still trying to identify," said Lt. Tim Tomczak an accident reconstruction specialist with the Raleigh Police Department

Vandemerwe went missing from the Oxford pub in downtown Raleigh and was later found near the Beltline.

Police said Tuesday afternoon that the remaining piece of debris is from the right corner portion of the front bumper of a dark blue SUV. Investigating officers have determined it was part of a 2007-2014 Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, or Cadillac Escalade.

"We are confident we know how the wreck occurred in terms of the location of the vehicle and where Weston was hit," Tomczak said.

Crash investigators are looking for help from the public as they work to identify and locate the vehicle from which the bumper part originated to decide if it warrants further investigation.
