WRBL News 3 to expand weather team, add new weekend newscasts

Posted: Updated:

WRBL News 3 is expanding its weather team and adding newscasts to start the 2013 fall television season.

Senior Meteorologist Kurt Schmitz is moving from a part-time to a full-time position with the station, and will be moving to weekdays on the station's morning and midday broadcasts alongside anchor Tammy Terry. The station also plans to add a new co-anchor to the morning newscasts in the coming weeks.

Schmitz joined WRBL in September 2011 after a 34-year career in television meteorology.

Combined with Chief Meteorologist Bob Jeswald and Meteorologist David Reese, the weather team has more than 60 years of experience, most of it in the Columbus-Opelika television market.

Starting Sept. 14, the station will also expand its weekend news coverage, adding a late newscast on Saturdays.

The Saturday newscast will air at 11p.m. Eastern/10 p.m. Central. "The Ft. Benning Report" will air following the newscast.

Beginning Sept. 29, the station will complete the expansion by adding an early evening broadcast on Sundays.

The Sunday broadcast will air at 6:30 p.m. Eastern/5:30 p.m. Central, following the CBS Evening News, and leading into "60 Minutes."

Anchor Sydney Cameron, meteorologist David Reese and Sports Anchor Dayne Young will team up on the new weekend newscasts.

"At News 3, we pride ourselves in being On Your Side," said WRBL Vice-President and General Manager David Hart. "That means being a watchdog news organization that serves the public and having the area's most experienced weather team to protect them during severe weather. These additions to our staff and our weekend newscast expansion reinforce that commitment."

The new newscast means WRBL will be delivering more than 22 hours a week of local news.

"We're excited about the new fall season and the start of SEC football on CBS this Saturday," said Hart. "Adding these new newscast will give our viewers new options when it comes to local news, weather information to plan their activities and the best coverage of college and professional sports - when and where they want it."
