Coates emerging as Tigers' big-play threat

AUBURN, Ala. -

Auburn sophomore receiver Sammie Coates has said since he set foot on the Plains that he wants to be the Tigers' big-play receiver.

Two games into the 2013 season, he is quickly becoming just that.

Coates is the Tigers' leading receiver so far with four catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Sixty-eight of those yards came on one play late in the second quarter against Arkansas State, when he hauled in a Nick Marshall pass to find the end zone for the first time this season.

"The fact that he converted that big play the other night, that definitely helped," said head coach Gus Malzahn. "That usually gives people confidence. The more plays they make, more confident they get, so we're hoping that occurs with Sammie."

Coates is already just two yards shy of equaling his 2012 total, when he caught six passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
