Carver's Pass wins Athlete of the Week

Posted: Updated:

Carver High sophomore quarterback Jawon Pass came into the 2013 season with some lofty expectations on his shoulders, and so far, he's lived up to them.

For that, he is our latest WRBL Athlete of the Week.

Pass opened the season with a two-passing-touchdown, one-rushing performance against Spencer in the Heritage Bowl, then threw and ran for two more each in week two in a 48-24 win over Shaw.

"I feel like I've been playing well," Pass said. "My receivers have been helping a lot, catching the ball, getting yards. I just love my receivers, they make my job better."

Pass—whose nickname is "Puma"—has had an eye for senior receiver Dreilon Freeman in the two games so far this year.

"He's a hard worker," Freeman said. "He always comes to practice on time, is a leader, and he's always dedicated. He stands out from everybody and it shows on the field."

Given that Pass is just a sophomore, he, the team and his coach all know he needs some help leading the offense.

"The biggest thing, the O-line is doing a good job giving him protection, giving him time to stay upright, throw the ball," said Carver head coach Joe Kegler. "Then, once they give him time, we feel like he'll find the receivers and they'll catch the ball once it gets to them."

Friday Pass faces his toughest test as a starter. Carver travels to Moultrie, Ga. to face AAAAAA Colquitt County.
