Columbus police sergeant threatens teen with gun

Posted: Updated:

A Columbus police sergeant quits after admitting he pointed his gun at a teenager and threatened to shoot her. News 3 filed an open records request and obtained a copy of the Investigative Summary involving former Sergeant Miguel Balauitan.

In April, Balauitan and his squad responded to the Twin Cedars Youth Services, a home for troubled teens. The incident report says several young girls had barricaded themselves in a room and officers had to knock out the window to get them to come out.

The summary says a 15-year-old was so disruptive, she had to be handcuffed. As she tried to kick Sergeant Balauitan, he pushed her on the couch and pointed his gun at her. The summary says Balauitan told the girl, "You don't know me. You don't f****** know me. I will kill you. I will f****** shoot you."

Balauitan didn't want to talk to News 3 and only said that he resigned in the middle of the investigation.

"At no point are these officers instructed to pull out their service weapon and point it at a handcuffed individual who's not threatening that officer with bodily harm or death," says Major Lem Miller with the Office of Professional Standards.

Even though the summary found Balauitan violated the law, Miller says it was Chief Boren's decision to handle this incident administratively.
