Auburn running backs have Tigers ready for SEC

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn Tigers are almost a completely different team in 2013, and most of that is thanks to the running game.

Through two games, the Tigers have racked up 596 yards on the ground, and have had two 100-yard rushers—Corey Grant with 146 against Washington State, and Cameron Artis-Payne with 102 against Arkansas State. Junior Tre Mason just missed with 99 against the Red Wolves.

Compare that to 2012, when the Tigers had just 271 total rushing yards through two games.

"Running back is definitely one of the strengths in our offense," said Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. "They're all three different. We can utilize them in different ways, and so far they've all three been very solid."

Mason appears poised for a breakout game. Despite just eight carries for 25 yards last season against Mississippi State, the Bulldogs have said they are game planning to stop the explosive junior. With Auburn looking for its first SEC win since October of 2011, Mason knows what is at stake on Saturday.

"These are the games that really count," Mason said. "This is an SEC game and they determine if we're going to go to the SEC championship and how far we're going to go this season. We really need these wins, and we're looking forward to getting one."

Auburn and MSU kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
