COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Heading into the finals competition of Miss America, Miss Georgia Carly Mathis is one of the preliminary winners. Wearing a white two piece swimsuit, Mathis won the Lifestyle and fitness award for her group Thursday night. Miss Florida won the talent award for the third night of preliminary competition. Mathis will receive a $1,000 award for the preliminary win.

Contestants from all over the nation are in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the Miss America Pageant. That brings the pageant back to its roots after several years in Las Vegas. Another aspect of tradition will return this year with the Show Me Your Shoes Parade. That is scheduled for Saturday evening on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. We have not yet heard how the parade will be impacted by a large fire that burned portions of the boardwalk and several businesses throughout Thursday night.

Miss Georgia Carly Mathis is a student at the University of Georgia studying broadcast journalism. She recently completed a special report for News 3 that focused on a young girl's struggles with heart disease in preparation for the American Heart Association's Heart Walk.

The final night of competition for Miss America is Sunday evening.
