Governor seeks disaster aid to help NC counties

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Pat McCrory is seeking federal disaster aid to help 16 North Carolina counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians recover from this summer's heavy rain.
McCrory this week declared a state of emergency. That's the first step in securing federal financial assistance to help the communities.
A series of severe thunderstorms and heavy rains dumped between 10 and 20 inches of rain over much of the foothills and mountains in July.
Local, state, tribal and federal emergency managers have been working together to assess public infrastructure damages and review costs spent on repairs. Early estimates indicate nearly $25 million was spent responding to the floods and repairing the damage.
If approved, the presidential disaster declaration would make federal funds available to cover 75 percent of eligible costs.
