Social Security made $1.3B in overpayments

Posted: Updated:

Tens of thousands of Americans may have been overpaid by Uncle Sam.

A new report from the government Accountability Office finds that over the last few years, about 36,000 people were given disability payments they weren't eligible for.

To qualify, recipients go through a five-month waiting period, where they must not earn more than a thousand dollars a month.

In one case, the watchdog agency says a physician was earning $22,000 a month during the waiting period, and was still paid $90,000 in benefits over three years.

The Social Security Administration says its disability payments are more than 99% accurate.

Still, it is investigating, and says it will recoup any improper payments.
