Viral Video: Man rescued from New York City fire

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK, NY -

New York City residents -- in the right place at the right time -- saved a man's life as fire raged inside his apartment in the Washington Heights neighborhood.

Cell phone video captured the rescue. The man in red, trapped on the 5th floor, is literally dangling out the window as the camera begins to roll.

His neighbors frantically worked together to save him. Roscindo Lopez, the superintendent of the building next door, heard this man's desperate cries. Lopez, along with a neighbor, rushed to the fire escape.

Cell phone video shows rescuers extending a ladder to the man but it's too low. That's when the man climbs out of his apartment. He can be seen clinging to the side of the building as thick, black smoke pours out of the window.

The quick thinking rescuers used Lopez's ladder, turning it sideways, and creating a make shift platform between the fire escape and burning apartment.

Firefighters arrived just as the men made it safely back across the ladder.

Lopez and Portillo Humbly say they are not heroes.
