Amber Alert Procedures

Posted: Updated:

Many people in our area may be wondering why they didn't get an Amber Alert notice on their cell phones when Ayvani Hope Perez went missing. One reason may be alerts are only broadcast from cell phone towers in the area where the child is abducted, so phones in this area may not have picked up the signal.

Wayne Smith with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said each phone company varies on how they handle these alerts.

"Your provider may not push these to everyone. They may have a mechanism where if you want to receive them you can sign up to see the Amber Alerts. Other carriers may put it out to everyone they provide service to. It varies. It's carrier specific," said Smith.

He said these Amber Alerts are very effective and makes the public aware and alert in regards to abducted children.
