Alabama Attorney General spreads anti texting and driving message to teens Thursday

Posted: Updated:
GARDENDALE, Ala. -

Alabama's top attorney visited schools in Jefferson County Thursday to help spread the message that texting and driving is illegal and dangerous.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange spoke to teenagers at Mortimer Jordan High School and Gardendale High School about the "Drive 4 Pledges Day."

It's a campaign that is part of the "It Can Wait" program which educates the public about the dangers of texting while driving.

The "Drive 4 Pledges Day" urges people to share their commitment to never text and drive.

Strange was joined by officials from corporate sponsor AT&T, Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Nowlin, Kimberly Mayor Bob Ellerbrock, Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips, as well as school administrators, teachers and students.

In Alabama during the year 2012, 10 people were killed and 362 were injured in 1,005 crashes where the prime contributing circumstance was distraction by use of an electronic communication device.
