Goodwill to host Mexican Consulate fair

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Hispanic residents in our area who need to update or renew their Mexican government-issued passports and identification documents can do so at a Consulate Fair next week.

The fair, hosted by the Goodwill Success Center will be held on the Goodwill Cross Country Plaza campus  in Building B Sept. 24- 27.

Last year, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers (GWISR) assisted more than 900 people who were seeking documentation which can be used to obtain permanent legal status here and accountability with the Mexican Embassy. This year's annual event will also include a resource fair with area support agencies seeking to provide further assistance such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Muscogee County School District's English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department.

"The Consulate Fairs are some of our most sought out events each year," said Patricia McLeod, GWISR Senior Mission Services Coordinator for Hispanic Services. "These consulates allow for collaboration and relationship-building with clients and other supporting agencies. It is also a great opportunity to create awareness in the community about the other excellent career and financial services we provide throughout the year."

Those who attend the event will have direct access to a consul who can issue their Mexican documentation that same day, a process that can otherwise take several weeks. Most local businesses and agencies accept this documentation as a form of identification to access services such as opening a bank account or completing tax returns.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 6.4 percent of Columbus residents were  Hispanic or Latino in 2010.  An appointment is required for those seeking a consultation. For more information, you can call the Mexican Consulate Appointment Service at 1-877-639-4835.
