National Public Land Day

West Point Lake, Ga. -

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the West Point Project has made plans to celebrate National Public Lands Day (NPLD) by hosting the 2013 West Point Lake Cleanup on Saturday, September 28, 2013. NPLD is an annual event which provides opportunities for people to volunteer to work on projects that benefit public lands.  The West Point Lake Cleanup is an excellent way for local lake users to help the Corps improve a valuable resource while making a positive impact on the environment in general.

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.  It began in 1994 with only three sites and 700 volunteers.  It proved to be a huge success and became a yearly tradition, typically held on the last Saturday in September. Since the first NPLD, the event has grown by leaps and bounds.  In 2012, about 175,000 volunteers worked at 2,206 sites in every state, the District of Columbia and in many U.S. territories.  This made 2012 the biggest NPLD in the history of the event.

At West Point Lake, there are over 56,000 acres of publicly owned land and water, and some 2.5 million people visit there each year.  Unfortunately many of them leave trash behind, and that litter, combined with the things thrown from cars and trucks onto local roadways often finds its way into the lake.  Things like plastic bottles and bags, tennis balls, tires, drink cans and other such items find their way into coves and shorelines where they remain.  Most of these items will never rot and will be there for years and years to come, unless they are picked up and properly disposed of.

The West Point Lake Cleanup is meant to make that happen.  The event will begin at Pyne Road Park on Saturday September 28, 2013 at 8:30 am.  Lunch will be provided for the volunteers by corporate sponsors Wendy's on Lafayette Parkway and Coca Cola.  Volunteers are still needed.  For more information on this event or to RSVP your group please contact Park Ranger Rocky Millenbine at 706-645-6113 or by email at Rocky.G.Millenbine@usace.army.mil.

Instead of destroying them, The Columbus Police Department is selling hundreds of seized guns. Some of the guns were used in crimes, others were found on the road- all of them now headed back to the streets.“The policeman in me says I’d rather not see that gun back on the street, we’ve already gotten a hold of it once, but you’ve got 550 guns- will every one of them be used in a crime? No. Some of them will be sold to someone that will enjoy the use of that gun for the rest of their life and ...
