DURHAM, N.C. -

Thousands of students from Morehead Montessori Elementary, George Watts Montessori Elementary, and Lakewood Montessori Middle schools took part in an International Peace Day parade Monday.

Students assembled Monday morning at Watts Elementary at 9:30 a.m. Principals from each school talked about International Peace Day and peace education in Montessori programs.

About a thousand students walked in the parade. They walked from Watts to Duke University holding peace signs.

"When they go on to middle school, high school, into their university choices and into the community, that they can reflect on their peacefulness and how it begins with them and that they can take that message with them throughout their lives," said Patti Crum, principal of the Watts school.

The march was also a celebration of 20 years of Montessori education in Durham.
