New research from UAB suggests maintaining mobility may be key to aging healthily.
An early sign of physical decline is having problems getting around. Doctors say this can eventually affect their ability to live alone.
They recommend asking older patients if they have trouble climbing ten steps or walking a quarter of a mile, and if they have changed the way they accomplish either of these tasks.
Doctors say if they answer "yes", they may need to be referred to physical therapy or start using a mobility device like a walker or a cane.
