Fort Bragg identifies soldier killed in parachute accident

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

Fort Bragg has released the name of the soldier who died Monday when his parachute did not deploy.

Army Col. Darron Wright, of Mesquite, Texas, died while conducting a standard MC-6 parachute jump at Fort Bragg's Sicily Drop Zone. Wright was the Corps Assistant chief of Staff

"We are deeply saddened," said Lt. Gen. Joe Anderson, commander of XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Col. Kevin Arata said Wright was doing a jump to "maintain his proficiency." To maintain that proficiency, a jump is required every 90 days.

Following Wright's death, the XVIII Airborne Corps suspended the use of the MC-6 parachutes across the Corps and its subordinate units.

The Corps first began jumping MC-6 parachutes in July 2010. However, the parachute Wright used in this particular exercise is not routinely used by his unit, reported the Associated Press.

Wright, 46, graduated from the University of North Texas in 1991 and received his commissioned as an infantry officer through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

Wright's death is the first in a parachute training accident in two years. He is survived by his wife and children.

In a related accident, Staff Sgt. Jamal Clay died on June 25, 2011 when he fell 800 feet to his death during a training jump at Fort Bragg's Sicily Drop Zone.

Clay was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Officials said he died using one of the Army's newest parachutes.
