Troopers: Car runs stop sign hits and kills driver, 2 others injured

ROBERSONVILLE, N.C. -

Highway Patrol is investigating a early morning accident that killed a man.

Troopers say the accident happened just before 6 o'clock Saturday morning at the intersection of Vanderford Road and Grimes Road in Robersonville.

Troopers say a man, wife, and son were driving south on Vanderford Road when a car heading west on Grimes Road, driven by 33 year old Gary James, ran the stop sign and hit the truck.

Troopers say the driver of the truck, 48-year-old Thomas Bundy, was killed in the accident. The other two passengers were transported to Vidant Medical Center and Martin Memorial Hospital. Everyone was treated and released from the hospital.

James was arrested after his treatment at the hospital and was taken to Bertie Martin Regional Jail. Troopers say they believe James was under the influence and is facing multiple charges.

Authorities say James was charged with drinking and driving, on a seperate instance, about 12 hours before Saturday's accident occurred.

Robersonville Police arrested James around 6 p.m. Friday and charged him with DWI. No immediate details have been released about that arrest or why James was released from custody.
