COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A majority of civilian workers at Fort Benning learned Tuesday morning they would be furloughed through the duration of the government shutdown. The commissary will close starting Wednesday. Contracted workers at Fort Benning are not affected at this time.

All employees reported for work Tuesday but nearly 70% of civilian employees were sent home on an indefinite furlough. Schools, medical facilities and the post exchange remain open.

Military personnel and Fort Benning employees are encouraged to monitor a special site on the Fort Benning Web page for complete details.

Civilian workforce at other Georgia installations are also being furloughed. Both Moody Air Force Base in south Georgia and Fort Gordon near Augusta have announced their civilian work force have been placed on unpaid leave.

Many federally funded programs and agencies closed at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning after funding for the fiscal year ran out.

Congress is continuing their debate on Capital Hill today. You can watch those discussions live here on WRBL.com. Stay with WRBL News 3 and CBS News for continuing coverage on-air and online.
