Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs continues services

Posted: Updated:

Alabama Department of Veterans' Affairs officials are reassuring veterans and their families that services provided by the state agency will continue despite the federal government shutdown.

"Although the shutdown will affect some services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the state VA remains fully operational to meet the needs of our Veterans and their families," said W. Clyde Marsh, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs.Tuesday the federal VA released a list of services that will not be affected by the shutdown.

All VA medical facilities and clinics will remain fully operational, including inpatient and outpatient care, and other special care services.  Veteran claims processing and payments in the compensation, pension, education, and vocational rehabilitation programs will also continue through late October.

According to the federal VA, the shutdown will have an immediate impact on some services such as the closing of national VA call centers, discontinuing claims appeals and public awareness activities.

For Alabama veterans, the state VA remains operational with services continuing at the county veterans service offices, veterans homes and state veterans' cemetery at Spanish Fort.
