Opelika man dies after car accident

Posted: Updated:

An Opelika man is dead after a one-vehicle crash.

Tuesday morning around 7 a.m. officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to a single vehicle accident on Pepperell Parkway near 24th Street. Personnel from the Opelika Fire Department, and EMS also responded.

Upon arrival, officers saw a gold Nissan Maxima in the grass on the eastbound side of the roadway next to a tree. Officers contacted the driver and he was transported from the scene to the East Alabama Medical Center by EMS.

The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, was identified as 20-year-old Jeffery Montrel Lyles, Jr. Lyles later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the East Alabama Medical Center.

The initial investigation revealed the victim was traveling east on Pepperell Parkway when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time. The coroner suspects alcohol may have been a factor.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Opelika Police Department at (334) 705-5200 or they may call the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665. The case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit.
