TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Tampa police arrested a man who they said shot and killed his pregnant girlfriend, 22-year-old Brianna Anderson, in Tampa Wednesday evening.

Police took Jamar Anjuan Silas, 22, into custody and charged him with possession of firearm by a felon. Officers had searched for Silas for four hours, when they finally spotted him in a blue Hyundai on southbound I-275. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office website Silas has been arrested 10 times and has also been in state prison.

Anderson was late in her third trimester of pregnancy when she was shot once in the head at her apartment in the North Boulevard Homes complex.

"The only good news to report is that her baby survived this ordeal," said TPD spokesperson, Laura McElroy. "Doctors were able to save the baby's life and the child is doing well.

Anderson's neighbors said she had a three-year-old son who witnessed the shooting.

"The guy who actually shot her, I guess it was her boyfriend, he brought the baby across the street to her brother, handed him off and then he just started running," said Maurice Harris.

Police credit the quick actions of first responders for keeping Anderson alive and giving doctors time to safely deliver her baby. Dr. Jill Hechtman said if Anderson had passed away before the deliver, doctors would have had between four and seven minutes to safely save the child.

"Generally, if you're in some sort of trauma, and your baby is getting the good majority of blood flow, so that if they can keep the blood flowing to the baby, and you get there in time, they can get the baby out safely," Dr. Hechtman, an obstetrician.

Hechtman also noted that the risk of domestic violence can increase during pregnancy. Between five and 20% of pregnant women are victims of domestic violence.

"It does pose a stress to families because of increased costs they might be encountering," she said. Relationship and social strains are also contributing factors.

Residents who live in the North Boulevard Homes community are staging a memorial for Anderson at 5 p.m. at the corner of Chestnut and Delaware Streets. Organizers said they are also protesting gun and domestic violence.
