Xerox Commercial Solutions out of Cary plans to eliminate 508 positions in Cary, according to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
A document dated Sept. 16 confirms the layoffs.
In a letter to the state, Xerox wrote that the terminations will happen on or about Nov. 14.
The letter said the layoffs would impact 450 customer care assistants, 25 supervisors, three managers, eight training specialists, 10 customer care specialists, one program manager, one sales manager and one general manager.
Xerox reported about 4,400 employees in North Carolina and about 1,500 in Cary.
In an email, Bill McKee of Xerox said, "These reductions, while very difficult decisions, reflect the changing business requirements of our clients.
"Approximately 500 positions will be eliminated, but we expect to place more than half of these employees in other positions within our other lines of business in Cary.
"Xerox will continue its presence in Cary. The changing demands of Xerox's clients produce cycles of hiring. We continue to hire new employees in many locations and will continue to hire in Cary to meet the needs of other clients.
"Xerox provides customer care support to a range of industries including technology, communications, banking and financial services, travel, retail, education, government, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.
"Different call centers require different skill sets. At times we may ramp up or slow down, depending on the changing needs of our clients. While at this time, we are closing this specific business operation, at the same time we expect to be hiring several hundred employees for other lines of business.
"Separation packages will be provided to those who qualify."
