GDOL: Increase of unemployment claims because of government shutdown

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

2,700 civilian workers at Fort Benning are on furlough because of the government shutdown. Paul Kizinkiewicz, a supervisor in the Doctrine and Training department, is one of the many federal government workers filing for unemployment benefits.

"My concern, as most of the people that work with me, for me, I work for, are concerned because we have bills. Ultimately we feel that our political leaders have let us down," says Kizinkiewicz.

The Columbus branch of the Georgia Department of Labor has reported about 250 unemployment claims since the government shutdown Tuesday. It's about a 400% increase from their average influx of unemployment benefit claims.

"We're beginning to see, throughout the state, particularly in areas where there is a military base, such as in Columbus, a fairly significant increase in the number of claims for insurance benefits and those of course are being done by the federal employees who are being furloughed," says Sam Hall, the Director of Communications with the Georgia Department of Labor.

Hall says if you're a furloughed worker and want to file for unemployment benefits, you can apply online or visit a local career center. You will need a proof of earnings document (W2 or most recent paystub), a furlough letter and an SF-8 if your agency provides one. It takes about a week to process an unemployment claim.
