Chapel Hill breast cancer survivor finds strength in fitness

Posted: Updated:

According to researchers, one in eight women will get breast cancer and tens of thousands on average will die every year because of it.

So, as we kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month this week, WNCN talked with a survivor who shared what kept her going during the difficult ordeal.

"In the summer of 2010, I started having striking pain in my left breast," said Michelle Kuplic. "It was that odd, nagging feeling that something wasn't right.

"Suddenly you get this weird sensation, and you go, ‘this isn't normal.'"

Three years ago, Kuplic decided to get tested but doctors kept saying she was fine.

"I went in for a checkup and nothing showed. Went in for my mammogram and nothing showed," said the survivor.

But she knew something was wrong and eventually, doctors found that she did in fact have breast cancer.

That's when she started prioritizing and got more involved with her gym. Her friends there were inspired by her story and started getting mammograms. They encouraged her to start teaching classes and that's exactly what she did.

Shortly afterwards, Kuplic got licensed to teach a spin class and said it helped her through the tough times.

"It kept me feeling like I was a part of normalcy," remembered Kuplic. "The biggest lesson is, be your own advocate. Trust your body's instincts and if you don't think something isn't quite right push for the right types of tests."

Kuplic teaches at the O2 fitness center in Chapel Hill and said the company is having a charity event all month called "Dance for a Chance." Some of their locations in North Carolina will be competing to see who raises the most money. The proceeds, will go to breast cancer victims in the Triangle.
