DURHAM, N.C. -

Anyone with kids knows that when you give them a gift, they often play with the box before they play with what's inside.

Saturday, kids in Durham had the opportunity to tap into their early childhood at the Museum of Life and Science as they built forts, planes, dinosaurs and anything else their minds could think up as part of the Global Cardboard Challenge.

The Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual challenge that invites kids around the world to design and build creations using cardboard and recycled materials.

Museum workers say some of the children spent hours playing with the cardboard, even forgetting about lunch.

"For the ones who want to go into the engineering side, they're testing their abilities to put structures together," said exhibit developer Kelly Marks. "Also, there's a lot of pretend and really great story play happening."

The cardboard was provided by national sponsor Mattress Firm.

The event was inspired by Caine's Arcade, an all-cardboard arcade built in 2011 by 9-year-old Caine Monroy in his father's Los Angeles auto parts store.
