Alabama House Speaker Hubbard, Senator Whatley to celebrate opening of new Pre-K classroom in Auburn

Posted: Updated:

Due to the increase in state funding for Alabama's high-quality, voluntary First Class Pre-K program earlier this year, a new First Class Pre-K classroom is serving an additional 18 four-year-olds in Lee County. The new site is one of two state-funded First Class classrooms in Lee County and the only First Class program currently in Auburn.

To mark the occasion, the Alabama School Readiness Alliance (ASRA) is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 9 at 9:30 a.m. at University Day Care (2454 East University Drive), the site of the new First Class Pre-K classroom. Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives Mike Hubbard, State Senator Tom Whatley, local education, civic and chamber leaders, members of the Alabama School Readiness Alliance's Pre-K Task Force and First Class Pre-K administrators from the Alabama Department of Children's Affairs are scheduled to attend.

The Alabama School Readiness Alliance and its statewide Pre-K Task Force led legislative advocacy efforts for an increased investment in the state's First Class Pre-K program this year, as part of the ASRA Pre-K Task Force's ten-year campaign to fully fund First Class while maintaining its strong benchmarks for quality and accountability. The Pre-K Task Force is a statewide coalition of 40 prominent leaders from the business, education, civic, medical, legal, philanthropic, military, and child advocacy communities.

Despite being recognized by the National Institute for Early Education Research as the nation's highest-quality state-funded pre-k program, the voluntary First Class Pre-K program reaches fewer than ten percent of Alabama's four-year-olds. Due to the recent funding increase, enrollment is up from just six percent of four-year-olds last year.
