U.S. suspends significant military aid to Egypt

Posted: Updated:

The Obama administration announced Wednesday it's cutting off hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid to Egypt.

The move comes months after Egypt's first democratically-elected leader, President Mohamed Morsy, was forced from office.

According to senior White House officials, the move means an immediate halt to a 260-million dollar cash transfer and the suspension of large-scale military systems like apache helicopters, F-16 aircraft, M1A1 tank parts and harpoon anti-ship missiles.

Officials say some of the aid will be "repurposed" to benefit the Egyptian people.

Humanitarian aid to the country will continue.
