Tennessee's open practice has attendance of 40,000

Tennessee coach Butch Jones says the Volunteers' open practice Saturday should allow his team's 32 newcomers to enter the season with at least some idea of what it's like to perform in front of a big crowd at Neyland Stadium. The Volunteers tuned up for their Aug. 31 season opener against Utah State with a workout that drew an announced attendance of 40,000 to Neyland Stadium. Fourteen of Tennessee's newcomers were here for spring practice and got to play in the Orange White Game, which had ...

BRISTOL, TN (WJHL) -

10 years ago Bristol Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith offered the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech 20 million to play a college football game at the world's fastest half mile oval.

Maybe coach Jones knew something then - the Volunteers and Hokies will play a football game at B-M-S in 2016 according to multiple sources.

I've also learned that officials from both schools were at the race track about a week ago and that cones were put down to mark the endzones.

The scoring tower in the middle of the infield obviously will be taken down and the Volunteers will be the home team, so the schools can take advantage of the SEC television package.

The speedway holds over 150-thousand. the attendance record for college football is over 115-thousand, set last month at Michigan Stadium for the Michigan-Notre Dame game.

Neither school is talking but the Bristol Motor Speedway has scheduled a press conference for Monday morning.

News Channel 11 will be live at the speedway and we will live stream the press conference right here on WJHL. com.
