Regional transit leaders to meet in Tampa - WRBL

Regional transit leaders to meet in Tampa

Posted: Updated:

Transit leaders from across the state are meeting Thursday to talk about ways to move the Tampa Bay area forward.

At the Tampa Bay Regional Transportation Summit at the Tampa International Airport, representatives from six local counties will discuss current commuter rail projects and transit proposals happening in their communities.  A presentation will also be made from All Aboard Florida, a private project that plans to connect Miami to Orlando.

At another meeting Thursday, the Florida Department of Transportation is asking residents how they think both sides of the Bay should be connected.

The northbound lanes of the Howard Frankland bridge will be replaced.  Some possibilities for the replacement bridge include leaving space to build a future rail line or express toll lane.

The FDOT public hearing starts at 5 p.m. at the Tampa Marriott Westshore.

FDOT officials say building a bridge, with future light rail accommodations, is the alternative to replacing the bridge as is. Some Hillsborough and Pinellas county officials say some form of public transit, on any future connection, is vital to economic growth across the bay.
