Poll: 60 percent of Americans would fire all of Congress

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Sixty percent of Americans say they would fire every single member of Congress if they could, according to a new poll by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal.

That's the highest figure ever recorded in a poll, which was taken in the wake of the government shutdown and threat of the U.S. defaulting on its debt for the first time.

More people blame Republicans than Democrats for the shutdown, with 24 percent of respondents saying they approve of the job Congressional Republicans are doing versus 36 percent who approve of the job Democrats are doing.

Tea Party Republicans also have a better view of their party than non-Tea Party Republicans, with 29 percent of Tea Party Republicans believing the GOP is putting politics ahead of the good of the country.

That compares with 53 percent of non-Tea Party Republicans, who say the party is putting politics first.

President Barack Obama's approval rating, meanwhile, increased by 2 percent to 47 percent.

Meanwhile, Obamacare has become more popular and a majority now believe the government should be doing more.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents see the health-care law as a good idea versus 43 percent who see it as a bad idea. That's up from 31 percent who viewed it favorably last month.

And 52 percent of Americans now believe the government should do more to solve problems - up from June, when the public was split evenly on whether the government should do more or less.
